Inspect & renew tile grout

Cement grout joint refurbishment

Assess cementitious tile grout, distinguish damage patterns and plan targeted refurbishment. Area, joint width, substrate and moisture observations help preparation.

Purpose and applications

What this service is intended to solve.

Cement grout joint refurbishment renews damaged mortar between sound tiles. Findings determine whether cleaning, local repair or wider regrouting is appropriate. New grout does not restore damaged waterproofing or replace movement joints.

  • Bathroom and shower: floor and wall tiles with assessed build-up
  • Kitchen tile areas, with separate flexible junctions
  • Indoor floor and wall tiling
  • Balcony and terrace only with suitable tiling, sound build-up, assessed drainage and intact waterproofing

Existing condition

Removal and substrate come before the new joint or surface.

Existing material, adhesion, moisture, geometry and adjoining components determine whether local repair is sensible or a wider build-up must be reviewed.

Materials

Compatibility is selected for the project, not from a product name alone.

  • Grout suited to joint width, tile and exposure
  • Cleaning and application according to the assessed product system
  • Flexible movement joints and waterproofing as separate details

Work process

From the first record to a defined scope.

  1. 01

    Inspect condition and cause

Record cracks, erosion, discolouration and missing material by location and extent. Hollow-sounding or loose tiles, recurring cracks or moisture require assessment of the tiles, adhesive bed, substrate and, where relevant, waterproofing first.

  2. 02

    Define removal depth

Required depth follows the joint geometry and the selected manufacturer’s instructions. Carefully remove damaged grout to sound material; do not skim over weak joints. Protect tile edges and underlying waterproofing. If safe working depth is insufficient, reassess the build-up and method.

  3. 03

    Clean joints and substrate

Remove and vacuum loose material, dust and bond-inhibiting contamination from joints and flanks. Check soundness and moisture. Cleaning, drying or any pre-wetting follow the actual product instructions; leave no standing water in joints.

  4. 04

    Select the product and system

Tile material, sensitivity, joint width, exposure and indoor or outdoor position guide selection. Check compatibility and staining on a trial area for stone or sensitive finishes. Cement grout replaces neither movement joints nor waterproofing.

  5. 05

    Grout and protect

Follow the current product sheet for mixing ratio, working time and temperature. Fill the prepared joint fully, clean at the appropriate stage with a compatible method and protect fresh grout from premature water exposure and unsuitable weather.

  6. 06

    Cure and return to use

Foot traffic, shower or other water exposure, full service and initial cleaning can have different waiting times. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and actual site conditions rather than a blanket next-day promise. Record the product, colour, care and release times at handover.

Warning signs

What should be documented before work starts.

  • Cracks: document their course, recurrence and junctions
  • Erosion, sandy areas and missing material
  • Discolouration: assess cleaning and moisture separately
  • Hollow-sounding or loose tiles and recurring moisture: assess tiling, substrate and waterproofing before regrouting

Project preparation

What makes an enquiry useful.

  1. 1Overview and close-ups of joints and junctions
  2. 2Area, tile format, joint width and affected sections
  3. 3Previous repairs, cleaning agents and moisture history
  4. 4Plan access, protection and downtime together

Limitations

A new visible finish cannot compensate for every concealed defect.

Persistent moisture, movement, insufficient build-up or unsuitable adjoining materials may require a broader technical clarification before the selected work can be warranted.

Care and maintenance

Document the handover and observe changes.

Cleaning agents, ventilation, exposure and maintenance intervals depend on the installed system and use. The handover should record applicable care notes and which joints remain maintenance joints.

FAQ

Questions before requesting this service.

Which information is useful for an initial assessment?

Overview and detail photos, dimensions with units, substrate and existing material, observable damage, access and the desired timeframe.

Is removal of the existing material included automatically?

No. Removal, disposal, substrate repair, protection and finishing must be described as separate scope items and confirmed in the quotation.

Can the final system be selected from photos?

Photos support preparation, but compatibility, moisture and concealed build-up may still require testing or an on-site inspection.

Scope and cost factors

Compare the work, not just a metre or area rate.

Only verified joint-sealing guide values are shown on the estimate page. Coating area prices are not invented.
